Yes, AI Dungeon is free to play, with no monthly fee and no trial clock. The free plan gives you 9 story models, 2,000 to 4,000 tokens of context, 25 memories and no monthly credits. That is enough to try any adventure. What it isn't enough for is a long one, because the AI only sees the most recent stretch of your story. Below is what each limit means in play, where the free plan runs out, and how far a paid plan actually moves it.

The short version

  • Price: free, indefinitely. Paid plans run $14.99 to $99.99 a month.
  • Story models: 9 on the free plan, including Muse, Wayfarer Small 2, Shimmer and DeepSeek V4 Flash. Paid plans add 11 to 13 more.
  • Context: 4k tokens on most free models, 2k on Madness, Hearthfire and Harbinger, 3k on DeepSeek V4 Flash.
  • Memories: 25 memory slots, against 100 to 800 on paid plans.
  • Credits: none. Paid plans include 760 to 5,200 a month, which buy extra context on some models and premium images. The free plan keeps unlimited SDXL Lightning images.

How much of your story the AI sees

Context is the slice of your adventure the AI reads before it writes the next turn. Anything older falls out, unless it's in a memory or a Story Card. On the free plan that slice is short.

A 100-turn adventure: what the AI still sees
4k about the last 20 turns
In context Forgotten unless pinned
Rough guide: about 200 tokens a turn (your action plus the reply), at each plan’s typical base context, before memories and instructions take their share.

In practice: a fresh adventure feels sharp for its first dozen or so turns. After that, details from the opening start slipping — the name of the innkeeper, the promise you made, the sword you picked up. It isn't that the free model is bad. It just can't see that far back.

Free and paid plans side by side

PriceBase contextMemories and credits
FreeFree2k–4k tokens25 memories, no credits
Journey$14.99 a month8k (Muse 16k)100 memories, 760 credits
Legend$29.99 a month16k (Muse 32k)200 memories, 1,650 credits
Mythic$49.99 a month32k on most models400 memories, 2,750 credits
Ultimate$99.99 a monthUp to 64k800 memories, 5,200 credits

The jump that matters most is the first one. Journey ($14.99) doubles base context to 8k, and gives Muse 16k. Legend ($29.99) is where most models reach 16k and Muse reaches 32k. Above that, you are paying mainly for more credits and the largest third-party models.

Where the free plan runs out

  • Long adventures. The short context is the real limit; a campaign of a hundred turns will forget its own beginning.
  • No credits. Some models let paid players spend credits each turn for extra context. With zero credits, the free plan can't, and premium image models need purchased credits.
  • Fewer models. The bigger premium story models are paid-only.
  • 25 memories. Enough for a handful of key facts, not a whole cast.

How to stretch it

  1. Pin what matters. Use the memory slots for facts the story can't lose: names, relationships, the goal.
  2. Use Story Cards. A card for each main character or place puts it back in front of the AI when it's mentioned.
  3. Pick a 4k model. On the free plan, Muse, Wayfarer Small 2, Shimmer, Dynamic Small and Fable get twice the context of the 2k models.
  4. Play in chapters. End an adventure at a natural break and start the next one with a short summary as its opening.

Is it worth paying?

If you play short, improvised scenes, the free plan is genuinely enough. If you want one adventure to run for days, Journey is the cheapest real improvement, and Legend is where memory stops being a daily chore. Either way, AI Dungeon puts you in charge of memory: you decide what to pin, what to card and what to summarize.

If you'd rather not manage memory

That last point is a feature for some players and a chore for others. Loreon — ours, so weigh this accordingly — takes the opposite approach: you play authored stories, and the game tracks the map, your inventory and your objectives automatically, so nothing you did falls out of the story. It's free to start with a daily allowance of actions. The trade-off is real: you get crafted stories with endings, not AI Dungeon's blank-page freedom. Common questions

Is AI Dungeon free?

Yes. The free plan has no monthly fee and no time limit. It includes 9 story models with 2,000 to 4,000 tokens of context, 25 memory slots and unlimited SDXL Lightning images, but no monthly credits.

How much context does the AI Dungeon free tier have?

4k tokens on most free models (Muse, Wayfarer Small 2, Shimmer, Dynamic Small, Fable), 3k on DeepSeek V4 Flash, and 2k on Madness, Hearthfire and Harbinger. That is roughly the last 10 to 20 turns of an adventure.

What are AI Dungeon credits?

Paid plans include a monthly credit allowance (760 to 5,200) that never expires. Credits buy extra context on some models, turn by turn, and pay for premium image models. The free plan gets none, though you can buy credits separately.

Which AI Dungeon plan is worth paying for?

Journey at $14.99 is the cheapest real upgrade: it doubles base context to 8k and gives Muse 16k. Legend at $29.99 brings most models to 16k. Above that you mostly pay for credits and the largest third-party models.
