7 min readAny level
Short answer
Eight AI story games you can play free in 2026, sorted by what free means: no account, no turn limit, or a daily allowance. Exactly where each free plan stops.
No account: Perchance, KoboldAI Lite
No turn limit: Hidden Door, AI Dungeon
Allowance: Loreon, Friends & Fables
Last checked: October 17, 2026. Free plans change often; we re-check every quarter.
"Free" means three different things in AI story games: free with no account, free with no turn limit, or free up to a daily allowance. Almost nothing is all three, because every turn costs the developer real money to generate. This list covers eight games you can actually play for free in 2026, says exactly where each one's free plan stops, and includes our own game, Loreon, which you can play as a guest without signing up, and which gives free actions to start plus a daily top-up.
The short version
No account, no limit: Perchance AI Adventure or KoboldAI Lite. Both are plain, community-run tools.
No turn limit, free account: Hidden Door (5 worlds) or AI Dungeon (short memory).
A story with an ending:Loreon, free to start, with a daily top-up after the starting allowance.
A free taste only: Friends & Fables (25 turns a day) and Infinite Worlds (a few turns, then credits).

Perchance AI Adventure — free, instant, and plain
Perchance is a site of community-made generators, and its AI adventure is free to play in the browser with no sign-up. You describe a setting, type actions and it writes on.
What's free: everything. There is nothing to buy.
Where it stops: no saved world, no game systems, and the writing is noticeably simpler than paid models. It's a toy more than a game, but an honest one.
KoboldAI Lite — community GPUs, or your own
KoboldAI Lite runs in the browser and sends your story to the AI Horde, a network of volunteers lending their GPUs. It has an adventure mode, and no account is needed. If you have a strong PC you can run KoboldCpp locally instead and never wait.
What's free: unlimited play, on someone else's hardware or your own.
Where it stops: queues at busy times, smaller models, and some setup if you go local. Best for tinkerers.
Free account, no turn limit
Hidden Door — unlimited turns in five worlds
Hidden Door's free plan has unlimited stories and turns, in up to 5 worlds from its catalogue, plus one character conversation a day. The Fan plan at $7.99 a month opens every world.
What's free: more than almost anyone else gives.
Where it stops: five worlds, English only, and adventures are episodes rather than long campaigns.
AI Dungeon — the original, with a short memory
AI Dungeon's free plan has no fee and no trial clock: 9 story models with unlimited turns. The catch is context, the slice of story the AI rereads each turn, which is 2,000 to 4,000 tokens on free models. That's roughly the last 10 to 20 turns. We broke it down in what the AI Dungeon free tier actually includes.
What's free: unlimited turns with no time limit.
Where it stops: long adventures forget their beginning. Journey ($14.99 a month) doubles the memory.
Character.AI Stories — guided, with ads
Character.AI's free plan includes Stories, its guided interactive-fiction format, and since November 2025 the only option there for under-18s. It's ad-supported; c.ai+ at $9.99 a month removes ads and adds a newer model.
What's free: stories and chat with an enormous character library.
Loreon is ours, so read this one with that in mind. Honest version: you can play as a guest without signing up, or sign in with Google or Telegram. A guest's progress is saved on our servers like anyone's, but the guest is recognised only by that device: it can't follow you to another one, and clearing the browser's data loses access unless you sign in first to keep it. A new account gets 250 actions and 3 story keys; a key opens one story for good. A turn costs 1 action on standard narration or 2 on enhanced (the default), and illustrations cost extra. After that, a daily reward adds actions back, about 15 a day on average and more with a streak.
How far Loreon’s free actions go
Days before you’d need to pay8After that, the daily reward buys about 7 turns a day.
Uses the average daily reward (15 actions, before streak bonuses) and leaves out illustrations, which cost 3–7 actions each.
What's free: three authored stories with real objectives and endings, played on the web or Android in five languages.
Where it stops: there is no turn limit, but free actions run out with heavy daily play; then it takes a subscription or a bundle.
Friends & Fables — 25 turns a day with a real rule set
An AI game master for D&D 5e-style campaigns on Discord or the web. The free plan gives up to 25 turns a day and 3 player campaigns; Starter is $19.95 a month.
What's free: a real session's worth of play each day.
A browser gamebook that writes options live and illustrates scenes. You can play a little for free; after that every turn costs credits you buy.
What's free: enough to see if you like it.
Where it stops: quickly. It's pay-per-turn after the taste.
Not free, and worth knowing
NovelAI is a subscription with a short trial. AI Roguelite is a one-time purchase on Steam. Both are covered in the best AI story games in 2026.
How to pick
Decide which kind of free you need first. If you won't make an account, start with Perchance or KoboldAI Lite. If you want to play for hours without counting, Hidden Door and AI Dungeon are the most generous. If you'd rather a story that goes somewhere and ends, and don't mind a daily allowance, try Loreon. Common questions
Are there AI story games that are completely free?
Yes. Perchance AI Adventure and KoboldAI Lite are free with no account and no turn limit, though both are plain community tools. Hidden Door and AI Dungeon have free accounts with unlimited turns, with limits on worlds and memory.
Which free AI story game needs no sign-up?
Perchance AI Adventure, KoboldAI Lite and Loreon can all be played without an account; in Loreon you play as a guest, recognised on that device. Most others require an account.
Is Loreon free?
Free to start, with no sign-up needed: play as a guest, or sign in with Google or Telegram. A new account gets 250 actions and 3 story keys, a turn costs 1 or 2 actions, and a daily reward adds about 15 actions a day on average. Heavy daily play needs a subscription or bundle.
Why do free AI story games have limits?
Every turn is generated by an AI model that costs the developer money to run. Free plans cap that cost with turn limits, shorter memory, smaller models, ads or a daily allowance.
