The Stray Familiar Café
Your grandmother left you a failing café, a one-tailed fox and a keeper's licence. Every war familiar left unribboned at First Frost will be put to sleep forever. Bake, befriend, ribbon, and try not to notice that your dishwasher, your three o'clock regular and the frost-eyed ambassador are all hiding who they really are.

A warm kettle, a cold café, and a fox who has been waiting
You arrive in Lanternmere in the rain with one suitcase and a key. For twelve years the Kingdom of Aveline fought the Night Dominion. The war ended last spring, and the ministry you worked for has thanked you for your service and let you go. Your grandmother has left you her café on Lamplighter's Row. The shutters are down and dust sheets cover the tables. There are forty crowns in unpaid notices on the mat. The big copper kettle on the range is still warm. Nobody has lit it in weeks.
On the counter sits a silver-white fox with one magnificent tail. She has run this café for forty years, and she is not impressed with you yet.
The war is over, but nobody told the familiars
Both armies kept familiars: small magical creatures born where an animal and a well-used object shared a soldier's life. They include:
- a newt that is also a field-kitchen kettle
- a finch whose beak is a bugle
- a rabbit with rolled bandages for ears
- a bat made of a black wax candle
When the soldiers went home, thousands of familiars were left behind. They sleep on the rooftops, in the railway yard and in the empty barracks.
Parliament has passed the Familiar Act. Any familiar without a licensed Keeper's Ribbon by First Frost, sixty days from now, will be collected. It will be put to sleep under glass in the Quiet Kennels, and nobody has ever been woken.
Your grandmother's keeper's licence has been reissued in your name.
Earn the ribbon
The strays come to the café one at a time: a kettle newt boiling in the chimney, a satchel mouse on the Registry steps, a drum hare thumping out marching time on the Twin Moon Bridge at dusk. None of them can be caught. Each one has to trust you first. That might take a warm place by the range, a message to carry, a song to dance to, or a whole afternoon of patience. Once a familiar trusts you, it chooses where the ribbon goes.
Each familiar you ribbon can take a job at the café. The kettle keeps the tea hot, the lantern moth lights the window at dusk, and the satchel mouse runs change. When the time is right, you can match one with a person who needs it. That might be the one-legged sergeant who lost his bugle finch in the war, or the widowed baker next door. A good home frees a ribbon for the next stray.
The Registry's book lists thirty-one familiars, from twelve humble commons to two legends. One of them is the golden pangolin who is sulking in your cellar.
Your licence grows with you
Every good deed earns a stamp on your licence card: ribboning a stray, finding a home for one, running a perfect day of trade, mending a quarrel or keeping a promise. When the card fills, the Registry raises your Keeper's Grade, and your spool holds more ribbons.
At every grade you choose one new knack from three. There is always one of each kind:
- Kitchen: a recipe that brings in new customers, such as a Dominion nightberry tart that draws the embassy trade.
- Keeping: a way with frightened familiars.
- The Row: standing with your neighbours, such as a regular who helps out at rush hour.
Nobody in this café is who they say they are
Rell, your new dishwasher, breaks a cup a day, salutes the postman and once lifted the range to sweep under it. She is also the Hero of the Twin Moons. Nobody ever saw her face under the golden helmet. She has retired and wants a normal life more than anything.
Lise takes the window seat at exactly three o'clock every afternoon, for exactly one hour. She says she is a governess. She is the Crown Princess, engaged by treaty to a prince she has never met, and this is the only hour of the day that belongs to her.
Noct is the Night Dominion's ambassador and the most frightening person in the city. She once made a minister cry by agreeing with him. Every Thursday she comes in to "inspect Aveline commerce" and leaves with the new issue of a penny romance serial hidden under her coat.
Behind the counter is Ginko, the fox. She spent eight of her nine tails in the war, and she is the only one who knows all of their secrets.
What kind of story this is
The Stray Familiar Café is a cozy slice-of-life fantasy with a collector's heart. It has:
- Small days that matter: a burnt batch of scones, a lost familiar on the canal steps, the Tuesday inspection, a stall at the Harvest Fair, the lanterns on the canal on Armistice Night.
- Two visible ledgers: the familiars you have ribboned, with portraits, and your Keeper's Grade with the knacks you have chosen.
- A warm, optional, slow-burn romance with the Hero, the princess, the ambassador or the fox.
- Real stakes, kept gentle: forty crowns of rates to pay, a patissière across the canal who wants your building, and a law you can change only with proof, signatures and a royal voice.
Nobody dies on the page, and nothing is solved by fighting. What's left to learn is whether ordinary kindness, repeated every day, is enough to save the strays before the frost.
